So I totally didn't realize that the girl from Secret of Mana had pointy ears until I played it on my iPod. Of course, they also replaced 3/4 of the graphics, so I wasn't sure if it was just something they added until I looked it up.
On the note of changed graphics, Buzz Bees and Iffishes are completely different. Same with trees. And water now has ripples and reflections. Some of the tiles that had collision in the original (ie. railings in the witch's castle) no longer block. Stairs no longer slow you down/cancel sprinting. New icons for most items/weapons. Biggest annoyance is the simplification of the AI settings, though. It uses presets instead of giving you the grid, and the characters don't attack nearly as often when you're not controlling them. I will say that I'm glad you can move without all 3 on screen, though. No more getting stuck and having to switch characters if they go on the other side of a fork in the path.

Somewhere, there's a midget laughing his ass off.
Oh god, it's happening.
I think the version in the store is... $8.99? Bloody expensive, like everything else Squeenix on the Apple store. As for how you play, it's got a virtual joystick in the bottom left, run and attack/interact buttons in the bottom right, and four shortcut boxes in the top right, where you can drag spells/items/menu options. Top left has a button that will bring up the ring menu, or you can drag any character's portrait to the middle to bring up their ring menu. Tap the portrait to control that character.
