It really depends on what you do with the computer. If you just surf the Internet and play old PC games, or other games with low requirements (or low enough that you can play them at least), then I can see how it would be a waste of money.

Well, in my case, I'll need to keep a fairly powerful computer at all times, especially when I become a game designer. I've already done a fair amount of research on this profession, so I know.
