They were toying with killing him off in 4. Like drowning at the end there. From what I've heard it's more on Mels side not wanting to revisit the role and feels 4 was good place to end it.

I played Goldeneye Reloaded a lot, and I have to wonder if it's canon to the films. I'm gonna have to get the first two Daniel Craig Bond movies from the library. I was a little surprised when I found out Craig had only had two films before this and already it was some kind of major milestone, then I found out about the 50th anniversary of the series.
