Im thinking on purchasing a PC in the next couple months, what do you guys think i should get.. im thinking the new Dell XPS 8500, seems like a good deal to me, im only getting the desktop for now, buying a better LED monitor later after purchase. i want this desktop mostly for gaming and emulation

Well I would Highly recommend building your own system. It is easy, cheaper, more efficient (because you get your exact needs) and basically you get to show it off XD (Pride). If your looking to build your own system I recommend and AMD CPU/APU as they have a very good price to performance ratio. As for store bought PCs I would recommend ordering from --- ( --- ), you can easily choose your exact parts and customize it how you feel and they will build it and ship it to you.
The market for prebuilts is abysmal, all of them are prone to problems because of certain components they cheap out on to cut production costs. I'd definitely go for a build. I'll second going for an AMD build, great for gaming and not too much of a bank buster. Intel has more powerful processors, but they are also more expensive as well. Not sure if I can link to components for a build suggestion - if so i'll list a good affordable build within that criteria for you later. Maybe a mod can clarify?
It depends what you require in terms of computing, my current build using second hand parts and a HP motherboard will add to about NZD $250/$300 basically it's got a 250Gb hard drive and soon going to have a 3Ghz core 2 duo and a mid range graphics card. For a grand you could get a very good PC, although really you probably only need to spend about $600/$700 to get a decent system.Quote:

If you've got a working desktop, you can salvage the optical disc drives from it, as they're hardly ever used aside from installing your OS nowadays. The HDD you may be able to take if it's a SATA. Look for "common issues" with the model numbers, check ratings and reviews, and look around for compatibility issues with any other parts you've completely decided on.

Decide on all the other parts (aside from the case) first, then look for a PSU. Use this tool to decide how much wattage you need. And when buying a PSU, make sure to go at least a little bit over that amount, because any extra peripherals or drives you add later will bump the power usage up bit by bit.
I've used this site before for information on computer parts, and it's great for building your own computer, you should give it a try.
