One RPG to rule them all

All right lateley i've been posting posts about what are your favorite rpg's, and pretty much downloading the roms people reccomended. Now i have tons,(over 20 gig of roms) and now i would like to know your favorite rpg. Not to download it but to compare it. Out of EVERY system and EVERY game you've EVER played, what is your favorite? now i've played many games too many to count. My favorite game that im picking is...

SUIKODEN

I pick this game because i DIVED into this game. I love this game its just absolutely amazing. Its original because its the first of the series, Amazing group RPG by recruiting and making a 6-man party from one hundred people(if you can recruit them all), and also for me it lasted for weeks of playing. Overall i would give this game a 10 out of 10 for oustanding role playing and hooking you into the game

Suikoden, eh? Well.. it's a solid game, and kinda unique but.. eh, they improved a ton of things in the second game. Still love it though.

So, yeah, Valkyrie Profile, you know the drill. Haven't seen a fighting system even remotely similar before, orgasmic graphics, voice acting, music, storyline. This game has everything, really.

The game that really perked my interest in the RPG genre is probably still one of my favorite games of all time. Final Fantasy VIII, not VII, but VIII.

Oblivion has really taken my interest as of late, though.

Chrono Trigger.

10 years later and Square is still trying to live up to the standard it set with that game.

Final Fantasy Tactics is up there for me, beating out all other RPGs and SRPGs as the one I can still play through, learn something new, and enjoy myself throughout the whole game.

There's just one thing with VP though and that's.. eh, how to explain this..

You can see many of the best parts of the game without actually doing anything yourself (the movie sequences are fucking long), so I kinda forgot to play through the dungeons the few first times I played it. That's kinda bad, but the resting feature can be so tempting at times (it ends the chapters). Also, hard mode means more characters, better weapon, possibly the coolest ending.. (sadly, it's nearly impossible to get without using a FAQ) just so you know. Going with anything else is just silly.

wow these games are soooo arguementitive see her pee i cant wait to play VP sounds great... Borman, tactics was a great game very difficult and good storyline... Segnin i know what ya mean by chrono trigger FLIPPIN AWESOME.... josh, i havent played FF8 yet but i cant wait till i do

Damn, narrowing it down to just one choice is going to be hard.

I'd have to say Rhapsody. Yeah, it's hardly the greatest RPG out there: The whole game is terribly short, sappily sentimental and about as hard as an impotent pensioner. It's also the only true RPG that I can just pick up and dive into for another playthrough. I have to be in the right mindset to play most RPGs (including the acclaimed classics like Chrono Trigger and Xenogears) but not this one.

I'll acknowledge dozens of RPGs as being better and more deserving of attention, but Rhapsody is still my favourite.

Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (Part one and two

It's my favorite RPG of this generation, no doubt. The story is great and the characters are probably some of the most well developed ever.

Gameplay wise the game is pretty old school. Buy stuff in the few safe zones that exist in the game and then head on to the next dungeon. And here's when the gameplay starts to shine; the battle system. The "Press Turn" battle system works pretty much the same as in SMT: Nocturne. It's a pretty fast turn based system that rewards you with an extra turn if you manage to hit the enemies using whatever magic/attack that they are week against. Enemies can also get extra turns by attacking your party's week points. After battle you get skill points that eventually will level up your current "mantra" and give you new skills. You can then choose a new mantra to start learning a new set of skills.

Graphic-wise the game looks pretty good. Some environments might look a little bland but that's the way the games look. It's a ruined world. The music is rather good in my opinion, especially the battle tunes. Composer is Shoji Meguro who seems to be hated by many but I'm not sure why.... I think his music really fits the SMT universe.

And lastly, the story. It's so fucking great! Taken from Ghostlight's DDS site because I'm lazy:

That's pretty much everything there is to say about the story. It's impossible to speak of DDS2 without spoiling the storyline of DDS1. So hurry and play play those games now! DO IT! :wacko:

Anyway, I'm not much for "best game evar" type stuff. I like Fallout, though. Planescape: Torment is also worth a mention.

No it doesn't. It really doesn't suggest anything. You have to experience it to understand the greatness. I'm sure you have nothing better do to pkt-zer0, so why not play DDS? :wacko:

pokemon gold-silver, update on a classic. plus for most of middle scool it was my clock. :O also added so much to the original games. ruby/sapphire were pretty weird. :(

Seeing as hun has already pointed out VP, I'm gonna have to go ahead and pick Star Ocean - Till the End of Time. The story itself if entertaining enough, and the gameplay is simply lovely. Think Tales of Destiny, but in 3D. You control one character while the others act upon the settings you gave them, while still being able to do what you tell them to via the menu if you see the need for it, such as using magic to heal a character or changing their target to another enemy. There's a bunch of guys to recruit, all with their own techniques and abilities. And, finally, the best part of the game, to me, was the impressive number of extra dungeons: the Seraphic Gate (which is found in VP as well, awesome tune in that dungeon), some cave in the mountains where you fight against the characters you can play with (quite hard at time if you fight, say, the two or three most powerful ones in the same battle, which happened to me), and that 100 level tower. Just an amazing game as far as I'm concerned.

Because DDS is just a watered down version of the SNES SMT games? :P
