GALVESTON, Tex., Sept. 21 - Hurricane Rita attained the strongest storm designation on Wednesday as it barreled toward the Texas coastline, forcing the evacuation of as many as a million people from this island city and other Gulf Coast communities along an arc from Corpus Christi to New Orleans.

Heeding the lessons of Hurricane Katrina, the authorities in Galveston ordered all residents to leave the city immediately and tried to evacuate the city's hospitals and nursing homes with buses, ambulances and helicopters. Businesses and public buildings covered windows with plywood, and the Strand, the central business district, was virtually empty by Wednesday afternoon.

"Coastal Texans should not wait until late Thursday or early Friday to leave," Gov. Rick Perry said. "Homes and businesses can be rebuilt. Lives cannot."

I wish a catagory 5 hurricane would hit Scotland, though you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

New Zealand website predicts hurricane will turn Coastal TX into the next "Adventure Island"

Actually a few years ago my mom was thinking about moving the family out to Galveston. But we didn't.

No... I doubt it. Galveston was trashed 100 years ago by a catagory 5... It was rebuilt to withstand most anything... And it has a Sea Wall so it's not going to get flooded nearly as easly as New Orleans.

Galveston was trashed by a category 4 in 1900, not a cat 5. Rita's also been turning steadily northward for most of the day and dropped to a cat 4. Even so, a storm surge into the bay would be concentrated to exceed 30 feet, most likely, which would probably overwhelm most of anything Galveston could throw up to stop it. Galveston will survive this, I'm sure, even if it is devastated as badly as in 1900. The loss of life will not compare to then, certainly.

They built a 17 foot seawall for this. Galveston has been hit like that before and they'll just rebuild. I am however, worried that at the last minute the storm will change course and head for New Orleans. The Levee's and walls the army built were meant to be temporary (as rebuilding a better/stronger wall's and levee's would take years) and if another Hurricane hit then New Orleans would be sunk for another couple of months.
