Default Best PC Controller to use

I'm new to this forum and new to emulation. I'm looking to run a couple emulators on my pc to play old games from sega and NES. I would like to use a controller instead of the mouse and keyboard so can someone direct me to finding the best controller to use?

Will any controller work for emulated games?
Do you have to have a different controller for each emulator?
Can a controller used on emulation games be used on regular pc games?
Can you convert a Xbox 360 controller to be used on the pc?

thank you for taking the time to help me out.

A friend of mine was able to use his wired Xbox 360 controller as a gamepad. Maybe you could look that up.

I can't really help you, I'm sorry, but I know for sure you can use the same gamepad for all of your emulators. For example, I use my PSP as a gamepad (via the FuSa Gamepad program) for all of my classic Nintendo and PSX emulators.

If I had to pick, I'd say use a wired 360 controller as a gamepad. It's a great one, so why not use it?

I use a Logitech dual analog something-or-another usb controller. I've never had a problem with it. You should be able to use it with any emulation program, and I've used it on a few different pc games, as well. I dunno if you can use it on every pc game, I think that might depend on each individual game.

My friend has an Xbox USB controller but I can't get my computer to read it at all

My friend also mentioned that he used some program for using his 360 controller as a gamepad. I didn't get to ask him, so I'm not sure what it is. But with it, he was able to play Final Fantasy VII on a PSX emulator.

A wired Microsoft 360 controller works fine for most emulators that I've used, I.E DeSmuME, ePSXe, ZSNES/SNES9x, Project64, and VBA. As long as there's an option to map the keys, it should be compatible. If it doesn't, use Xpadder.

As long as it's USB, for the most part; some better than others.

    Depends on the game.

Wired Microsoft 360 controllers are plug and play.

You might need to download and install a driver from Microsoft's site, and doing a little configuring in your options.

No way/need to convert it, you just need the USB wireless receiver for it to work, or a wired controller (which works without any other hardware).

I use my PS2 pad for pretty much everything, worked on every emulator I've tried so far (ZSNES/ePSXe/PCSX2/Dolphin) with this converter. Works on gamepad-supporting PC games as well.

    Just my 2 cents.

I have a pair of Rapoo V10 2.4g wireless controllers.
As well as wireless 2.4g keyboard and mouse.
    They all work faultless !
    Best purchase I ever made.

I use my PS3 controller for everything, personally. Works for me.

I personally don't like the 360 Controller's Dpad, but it was fixed in the newer model, so that's one I'd recommend.

That ps2 controller converter looks pretty interesting. I might try that out sometime in the future.
