It's definitely up there, but BT&DD is glitchy as hell. I haven't beaten it, though... I should sit down and give it a shot.
Is it? I played it a ton and don't recall experiencing anything that glitchy. Then again, it's sort of a Battletoads game, so maybe I just didn't mind terribly.
TRY AGAIN! The trick is to leave the last lamp(s) before fighting the spiked dude. Oh, and to have a strategy on the last boss. Yeah, with that you cannot fail!!!

The few times I played it wasn't too bad, but I've seen videos where just hilarious shit happens for almost no reason. I think the only ones that I had were things like falling through the floor and really weird hitboxes and enemies not spawning when they should, stuff like that. They were few and far between (I've probably played the game 10-15 times, just never sat down to really beat it), but it's definitely glitchier than most other games I have played from the era.
There are a handful of games I've beaten on the original hardware without the use of the old faithful Game Genie. The following are the ones I remember, there are possibly more:
Double Dragon II
Duck Tales
Faxanadu
Fester's Quest
Goonies II
Legend of Zelda
Maniac Mansion
Rescue: The Embassy Mission
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 2
Super Mario Bros 3
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Wizards & Warriors
Playing them again recently on an emulator, I have no idea how the hell I managed to beat TMNT and Fester's Quest. I only completed them both once each the proper way, and I'm guessing I fluked it because those games are so damned hard. One I never managed to beat without cheats was Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. I just remember losing all my lives and having to travel the entire fucking map again. That game was one which had me wanting to lob my controller at a wall.

You guys so silly.
Didn't like it much as a kid, but I should give it another chance, I suppose. I really loved my Faxanadu t-shirt, but my mum threw it away for some reason. ((((
