Clint Malarchuk, one of the assistant coaches for the Calgary Flames (the team we lost to tonight), took a skate to the neck back in '89 when he was a goaltender for the Buffalo Sabres. It severed his jugular vein. Fucking gruesome -- I will never watch that video again. How he lived is beyond me.

If you watch hockey and see the big floppy plastic things that goaltenders have hanging from their masks around their necks, that's why. Prevents skates from hitting their necks and killing them.

Apparently he was kind of fucked up after that incident for quite a while. He was quoted as saying he just wanted to get off the ice as fast as possible so that his mom wouldn't see him die on national television.
