I think I'm going to stop reading any new regarding the Xbone

    Spoiler warning:
Xbox One's Kinect Could Enforce DRM Restrictions

    Adam Barnes

Microsoft has filed a patent that could have Kinect control just how many users can access content on Xbox One.

    Published on May 24, 2013

Hot on the heels of Microsoft's Xbox One reveal was a large range of negativity, from the announcement's lack of games, the mandatory Kinect or the confused message from Microsoft regarding always-on and second hand games.

In answer to that, Extreme Tech has dug up a patent from Microsoft that seems to confirm our worst fears: the Xbox One could well be limiting our access to content under the guise of licensing.

Microsoft's patent is for a system that tracks the number of participants of any particular content - be it videogames, films or TV - and if that number exceeds a particular threshold "remedial action" can be undertaken.

What this means is that Microsoft could be looking to crack down on what is deemed a 'public viewing'. Though you might be watching a film in your home, if you invite a large group of friends around it could well consider it a public viewing - after reaching the threshold, anyway - and prompt you to purchase additional licenses.

This patent isn't specific to Xbox One or Kinect, however, and could be applied to any product, be it tablet, mobile phone, TV or even head-mounted displays.

Patents are filed all the time and not necessarily indicative of anything a product could actually use, so we wouldn't panic just yet.

But with the recent news that your Xbox One might restrict access to second hand games, it's hard not to be a little cautious.

Good thing no one's gonna buy the Xbox One, otherwise I'd be worried!

When does microshaft cross the line into inhuman territory? Every piece of new news so far has only expressed their cruelty to gamers. Is any good going to come out of the next generation or am I in the right to collect vintage console considering NOTHING new will ever be successful again?

Microsoft will be handing out achievements for watching TV

*PSA* Wii Redump collector's can now unscrub ISO files. So scrubbed games can now be verified. You can find the program to do this here

in other news, this consoles existence is hurting microsoft stock prices lol i didn't know that would happen

when was the last time a console caused such a shitstorm with just the reveal? this is the worst i've ever heard of 1 console causing so much rage across the world.

oh and heres something to think about: EA stops they're online passes... xbox one now confirmed to be "always online", coincidence? i somehow doubt it

Yeah, immediately after the M$ conference ended Sony stock shot up 9%. I'm not really shocked, since it was such a lousy press conference.

Wii U - no one knew what the hell it was or what Nintendo was trying to accomplish with it..... oh wait, they still don't

Yeah, but what will they do with Sony? PS4 doesn't have any DRM or required online connectivity, so I wonder how EA feels about that?

Hmmm.... I think M$ has gone completely off it's rocker.

knowing EA, they'll come up with some way of screwing things up somehow, don't they always? kinda impressive in a way. i mean they did make a rather big achievement by winning as the worst company in usa, 2 years running. they must be doing something right. lol

Oh, for sure. My guess is that they'll find a way to use Origin on the PS4 when it comes to any online gaming. Origin is just a mess of a program - it's basically just DRM spyware.

The one thing I'm really surprised about with M$ is that they didn't pay off a stupid amount of money to get CoD as an exclusive. Something tells me they tried but Activision grew a bit of a brain and said no since I'm sure they had at least some passing knowledge of M$' plan with their new console.

I seem to recall a certain scene in "Pirates of Silicon Valley." Woz quotes something along the lines of: "It was exactly as though Big Brother was leering over Steve's shoulder."

Mandatory Kinect is both unconstitutional and creepy...

I'm probably one of the few, but I loved that movie. I remember watching it when it first aired, then subsequently renting it on a shoddy VHS tape
I need to find a DVD of it or something.

I've been patiently waiting for that analyst guy Pachter to weigh in with his thoughts on the system and conference.... He's a total tool, but sometimes a nugget of reasoning actually comes out of him. Usually within hours of an event he's making wild proclamations and slamming everything in sight.

I remember he took to blasting Wii U almost as soon as their original reveal was over a few years back. I wonder if M$ gave him some cash to keep his mouth shut until after E3 (where they'll supposedly focus on games, games, games).
