I'm not sure about this one actually, both God Eater and Monster Hunter are games that lean on the Action Adventure genre IMO. I need further proof of them being JRPG. I have Monster Hunter in the main list because it's a pretty big franchise right now in japan, and I've put God Eater Burst in the "not sure" list for now, but in the final list I'll either remove them both or let them both stay.

Patapon is JRPG? I thought it was a rhythm game, can anyone else confirm this?

Oh you're right, how could I forget BioWare???

Although, I did mention some stuff there as well:

Confirmation for both God Eater Burst and Patapon series.

Both have HP, attack, defense, "elemental" defense stats... While Patapon is more of a mix between rhythm and ACTION-STRATEGY [you need to know how and when to attack, defend, avoid, AND BUILD YOUR ARMY BEFORE EACH STAGE! If that's not strategy enough, I don't know what is ]...
Well, GEB is more of a monster hunter similar. The difference is that the moves in there are way more stylistic for damn huge weapons, pretty much anime-like. There's more about stats to read about in that game than any Kingdom Hearts ever had. That and the bullet creation - it's not just spam shooting and recharge, a well done bullet can cause not only damage, but the right desired effect on an enemy, like breaking parts, making it trip or other things. It's more advanced than the bullet creation in Monster Hunter in a way.

I'm not making any of said games more or less interesting, I like 'em all and finished most, but I feel like it's unfair to leave these out of the list. XD

Anyway, i can understand GEB still being left on the not sure list for now, but if you still want confirmation for Patapon, here! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fw6ht9rZhY Shows the unit arrangment before a boss battle. There's unit type, their respective equipments and "platoon order" [if you put the strong hitting ones first or the long-range ones last, that sort of thing]
Been lazy to put up a sig since my account got wiped with that last EP crash. Well, here's something.

With logic like that you count Final Fantasy Tactics as an Ogre Battle series entry, right? Because I do
*PSA* Wii Redump collector's can now unscrub ISO files. So scrubbed games can now be verified. You can find the program to do this here

I agree on the strategy part, but not on the RPG part. It has to be an RPG, if it's an RPG, it can have strategy elements as well.

1-Does the game follow a linear path or a straight one? (how much exploration is involved?)
2-Are there any economical system involved? (buying potions etc.)
3-Are there any side quests or is it just one story?
4-Is the plot deep enough to be considered a JRPG?

Actually there is some logic behind the sorting there, but one only I could understand. As an example, the new ones are added to the bottom of the list. Thanks for reminding me anyway.
(although I have always found alphabetical orders meaningless )

1: Well, not sure about the difference, but about exploration, if you get back to older areas, sometimes under special conditions, new things may happen.
2: The KA-CHING! [seriously, this is the best name for money I ever saw in a game] You use it to make new units and make some items in the newer versions if I remember well. You had to gather items most of the time and use them with the money.
3: there are secret bosses, mostly related to the first part.
4: The plot as far as I remember is that they're searching for "World's end". in the meanwhile, all sort of stuff happens. A rival tribe tries to stop them, their shaman is kidnaped, they learn how to draw powers from old spirits [a sort of special attack], and when they think they reached the end of their quest, ... ok this is a spoiler, but links the first game to the second. The story goes on, they find an ancient hero to help them go on, a new rival tribe appears... The story IS simple, I admit, but it's not lacking. There are scenes between set stages.

Well, with that said, I just saw my files and saw "cross edge" for ps3. Considering it's slightly similar to Namco X capcom, there are also two games that could be added that are even more similar. One is Project X Zone for 3DS, and the other is a game for DS between capcom's characters and the ones from some "random" japanese group. If you look for "Xiaomu", there should be the game she appears on somewhere on the internet.

    AU CONTRAIRE!!

As far as I can remember, every JRPG HAS to tell a story, but you can explore here and there. sometimes the variety of places is huge, sometimes, you may even get lost, but the story will end up appearing sooner or later.

Non linear is more like those sandbox games, IMO. they have their story, but you can do everything else in the game. I don't remember jrpgs being like that...

Well Landstalker and Ladystalker are related.
TimeStalkers (aka Climax Landers) is a mashup type game, like Namco X Capcom or the like, featuring various characters from older Climax games. I suppose they stuck the word stalker in its title over here because nobody here really heard of Climax, but Landstalker was fairly obscure too...
Dark Savior is a one off game. Screenshots may look like previous ___stalker games, but it plays entirely differently and isn't related in any plotwise way.
Alundra was not a Climax game, it was made by Matrix, using old Landstalker staffers (you know, like Tactics Ogre>Final Fantasy Tactics). So it looks and plays like, but isn't actually related. 2 doesn't even look and play like...

    Makai Kingdom
    Mega Man X: Command Mission

    Arrow UPDATES!

Okay, exams are done, time for JRPG listing! I added some JRPG from the TVTropes page and a lot more is coming. Getting these sorted out later by their "importance" would be a real pain.
First off, I'd like to thank all of you who have posted in this thread. I was initially afraid that this thread would simply be ignored, but you guys have been a great help, so THANKS!

Hmm, you sure have got me interested in this game. But still, the main reason I can't add this to the list is that you're the only person who says this is an RPG. Here:

None of these reference websites lists this game as an RPG. I need other people to agree on this, since I haven't played the game myself. I would love to hear other people's opinions on this here, but since no one has had any comments on this so far, I created a topic at gamefaqs. I hope some people reply there so I can decide on this.

I can't add that since it's not released yet, and I couldn't find any news on an English version being planned.

The only game I found that had "Xiaomu" as a character was "Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier EXCEED" (And another SRW game) which are already included as a franchise.

Okay first off, I don't like to force games into genres. Each game is unique, and when we put them into a genre, we are ignoring their unique features, instead putting emphasis on what they have in common with other games. This is an insult to the people who tried their best to make something new and unique.

But that doesn't mean genres are entirely useless. You can use a genre as a method to get a general idea about the game's gameplay mechanics. While that doesn't say much about the game, it's usually good for times when you're trying to decide on a new game to play.

And that's what this is all about. I'm trying to make a list to help people who are interested in JRPGs to find a new game to play. I've made the rules for the list for this purpose. I'm not trying to define the JRPG, I'm just trying to put together a simple list people can use to find new games.

I'm trying to make a list that would benefit many people. One might have a rather narrow definition of JRPG, dismissing all the SRPGs and ARPGs as not true RPGS, while another might have such a wide definition that would cover all the games that feature some form of RPG elements in their gameplay. I'm trying to create a balance here. That's why I want more than just one person to agree on a game being JRPG.

Now, as for your question about non-linearity, many older JRPG games had some form of overworld that you would freely explore (and grind in). Basically, the more freedom of choice you have, the more "Role Playing" it is. Exploring, side quests, deciding on the outcome (multiple endings) etc. are factors that I use to gauge a game's level of freedom of choice.

With that said, there are many JRPGs that are absolutely linear (FFXIII), a somewhat new trend, which people are not happy with. In the end, if many people agree on a game being RPG, I assume it's an RPG.

Thanks for the insight. I've separated the games like this:

Does this look right? I excluded Dark Savior because Wikipedia says it's not an RPG.

Yeah, Makai is a spin-off, but put it on the list anyway
