    Default Xbox 360 Soft/Hardmod question

    Hey all, I couldn't find a thread already started for this so I made one.

    Basically I have almost every system and a lot of games, but I have never touched an Xbox 360 due to lack of console exclusive games [that interest me].
    I want to buy an Xbox 360 and mod it [games are cheap now]. I've only looked into the Wasabi 360 [slim], but I've heard of JTAG [no idea what it is other than modding].
    As far as simplicity goes, is the Wasabi 360 right for me? What soft mods exist for the Xbox 360 that have high compatibility and low to no learning curves?

    ~thanks

    General hack only let's you play back up discs (No homebrew). JTAG consoles can play pirated XBLA games and some homebrew. The problem is, they have to be extremely old. I think only the first generation of X360s, particularly those that have the very first 360 motherboards could be JTAG'd.

    As for general hacking, check here.

    Edit: I'm not very informative about 360 hacking. You might want to wait for other user's opinions.

    Get a Jasper or a slim and have it RGH'd with a CoolRunner chip: (It's the same as JTAGing but can be done on all consoles, regardless of motherboard/dashboard version)
    http://www.free60.org/Reset_Glitch_Hack

    That is of course if you want all the benefits of having a fully modded 360; XBLA games, Japanese games, free DLC, homebrew etc etc.

    If you just want to play burned retail games then a flashed console will do. Just make sure it has the latest firmware on the drive (LT 3.0), and then you'll have to get yourself an iHAS burner to be able to burn XGD3 games properly.

    Is the Xbox 360 region locked? partially right?
    Is there any method out there [right now] thats a softmod or requires NO soldering?
    What about that Wasabi 360--is that plug and play? Does anyone have it?

    for the record--i wont be burning games [i'd have to many coasters laying around--i just want to load .iso files [or whatever the 360 uses]]

    I'm pretty sure any method requires you to dump your nand.
    There aren't any plug'n'play methods afaik.

    And yeah, 360's are region locked when virgin........and I'm pretty sure firmware flash doesn't get around that either.

    Yes there are region locks. Almost every Japanese games is only playable on a Japanese console. There are also region locked PAL games, but they're mostly crappy sports games anyway...

    Every method of modification requires opening the console. Those DVD drive emulators require your DVD key, so if you have a console with a locked drive/PCB you'll have to get a new board which is unlocked and all of that jazz. Might as well just pay for a pre modified RGH system.

    I'd LOVE it if the wasabi was pnp--im not big on paying someone for something I can do myself [unless you can find a prehacked slim with external HDD loading for <$400]

    8.1.2012
    The automatic drive key extraction feature currently supports all Xbox Slim Liteon 16D4S drives, and support for the various Xbox Phat drives is currently under development.
    9.1.2012
    Automatic drive key extraction for Xbox Slim Liteon 16D4S drives is now supported
    so what drives does it support for key extraction?

    doing a little math here [elimination mode]

    I'd say it supports Xbox Slim Liteon 16D4S drives and they are working on PHAT drives?

    so.....not too sure. I know almost nothing about the 360 hacking scene--I'm more of a PS3/PSP guy [soon to be vita] every system but xbox...
    ===
    i *guess* i could buy a prechipped, but I dont want to spend 1/2 grand on it...I'd rather buy a slim and chip it...I always heard that 360 hacking was the "easiest"
    ===
    I guess for now I'll have to be content with every game for every system...except the 360...it has some JP games i want, thats about it though

    The latest firmware for it is still beta anyway.
    Best to wait methinks.

    Honestly though, second hand games aren't that expensive.......you can leave the out of region stuff for a bit imho.

    Nothing stopping you from downloading & archiving those games in the meantime

    Already started a months ago, but I prefer to buy used and make backups [faster than downloading]

    I wish EP's bitorrent had more complete packs...
    ===
    the reason I put off getting a 360 is because it lacks NTSC RPGs and exclusives--mostly JP games is what i want to play, but I guess i can wait...also $15 isn't cheap for a used game...I'm used to paying <$10 for used

    I actually just went about researching all this for myself (wanted to play some japanese/undub exclusive rpgs) and it's not as expensive as I had originally thought. The installation of a tx coolrunner ($20) for a RGH mod isn't particularly hard but you still need all the basic tools like wires/soldering iron, flux, etc (which I didn't have in my apartment- plus my soldering skills were never great). You can pay someone else to do it for around $50-60 (usually plus shipping both directions, but I saw a few that ship back for free). So you could probably buy a new 4gb slim for $200 and have it shipped directly to a modder and then have them ship it back for ~$275. Also you could just buy a used/refurbished one that's already been modded for $130-210 (depending on which model). [pricing references based on what I saw on the tech game forum's marketplace]

    Just buying and installing a xk3y or wasabi360 usb loader ($105-120ish) is pretty easy to do yourself, but will only work with with exact isos of discs (so no custom undubs) and I didn't look into if it bypasses region locking.

    Either way, if your goal is, like mine, just to play a handful of single player jp or custom undub rpgs that you can't find on pc/ps3- it's actually not all that expensive to get a RGH job done or buy a pre-rgh'd console.
