How do you compete with a phone that can go online, play nice looking cheap games, and is something you carry around with you at all times?
People like to forgot that Sony makes all kinds of stuff.

Keep in mind that Japan is in a piss poor financial state; with the yen rising in value and prices staying the same.

Fun Fact: Sony has a brand of Smartphones.
Also, they make TVs, Blu-ray players etc. etc.

OK...Ok... Let me clarify When I mentioned Sony I was referring to their video game handhelds like the psp or the new one coming out (what's it called vita or something?). Yes, I know Madden sucks, but the point was I see a trend with people being happy with simple cheap games that pass the time, over having to spend more money on something else to carry around even if it is superior. That is why I believe the handhelds need to adapt or they will fail.

I'm not going to blame the 3DS. I actually like it but the fact is that people aren't into it.
That'll probably change IF Dream Drop Distance gets released.
but I don't know. Games are pretty much dead to me =(

There haven't been many games released, and that's the problem. They released the 3DS way too early, in my opinion. If it had, from start, a library of 15+ games that can satisfy all the masses from hardcore to casual, then it would've sold a lot more.
But what they went for, was a pretty questionable business strategy and in fact people aren't interested. Not even I am that interested, mainly for the lack of releases (and hopiung that Resident Evil: Revelations is a good title). I don't think this means Nintendo's downfall, but if they continue with this management then it's certain death.

Hopefully if Nintendo does fail, which I don't want to happen, they'll take the SEGA route and continuing to make Mario, Zelda, and everything else on other systems.

Man that is so true, but the few games that we did get weren't bad though.
Ocarina of Time 3D I actually liked more than the original. The problem is people that didn't give it enough credit it or accept it for what it was because we as humans are incredibly ungrateful.

Except the Saturn has 8 million units sold.
Granted, it could've done a LOT better if the marketing was better, but the Saturn was NOT a failure.

Adaptation would require turning them into a phone.

Not enough games, everyone was too busy going on about the PS1.

From a marketing/management point of view the Saturn can be regarded as a failure really
