Formatting a Drive for my Ps3

I'm actually ashamed to need to look for help for this.

I have an old laptop with a 500GB 2.5" SATA hard disc drive in it.

Now I wanna wipe the thing to put it into my ps3 but I cant seem to figure out how to format it i.e. windows wont allow me to because the Operating system is on it. I cant find anything online to help me oddly enough, all I can find is ways to do it involving re installing the operating system, but I just want a wiped HDD.

Run Ubuntu from a CD/Flash Drive.
Mount drive.
Reformat using the Ubuntu disk management tools.
A Live CD can be found here.

Or
Format the drive with the tools provided on the UBCD.

my friend just stuck his right into the console, it asked for ps3 firmware then formatted the drive itself

Everything is running from the CD, as long as you choose not to install it.

I'm relatively certain that it is. Unless it's doing a fast format it could take a while to finish.

i second the whole shove it in the ps3 it will format for you

but Ubuntu can format without installing itself also
