Hmm yeah,
I wont be putting the spines of mine at risk either. Most of the ones I planned on scanning are simple 2 staple booklets.

I'm scanning at 400DPI, that way once I resize/crop/etc... it won't be as noticeable that I scanned without hacking the poor guide up . The resolution is something like 3400 x 4500 .

A bigger scanner would be nicer but my MP470 is pretty good. I've been thinking about getting a hand scanner but anything decent is around $300 .

The one I was looking at was wireless and I think bluetooth support was there as well, a usb one would suit me fine. The max on my current scanner is 600 but that is just unnecessary .
