I seem to recall a thread about American students who had to answer a survey on Japan, or some shit like that. Or vice versa.

    Similar results and such.

I got told all the time that James Bond is a real secret agent. The British are nutters. I myself am British, so I'm allowed to say that (right?)

Japanese people are nuts about Sherlock Holmes (it's a really good chat up topic when talking to Japanese chicks, guys), and everyone I've spoke to while I've been here seems to think he was real, but 58 per cent of Brits too? You've got to be shitting me. I think the most commonly believed myth in Britain is Robin Hood. He's a national icon over there, people even have well documented debates about where he actually came from, traditionally it's Nottingham, but the Yorkshire population believe he's part of their history. Another one would be the tale of Excalibur.

Mayhap there is something deep in our history which holds some truth to these myths, but it all comes down to I don't really care.

Honestly, I've never met anyone so willing to remain ignorant of certain facts in order to make a point. For instance, polling 3000 people means that there were dumb-asses amongst those people, and not much more than that.
Hey polling is pretty accurate, like the polling that said barrack obama was going to win New hampshire by an 8 point average.....Wait he won new hampshire right??? I dont have much faith in any polls, having taken a few statistic courses, my faith in the "science" of polling is quite diminished at this point, but it was an easy way to knock out my math pre-reqs. Statistics, margins of error etc are all the result of what i call fudge factors, or supposedly "derrived equations" that some how relate to stratas of polling data(cough bullshit cough). But seriously, we americans completely lost our grip on reality about say, 8 years ago almost. If the brittish dont hold it together, how are we going to know whats real or not?

3000 people for a poll is more than enough, based on that fact alone, to make it a reputable poll. It's actually quite a bit higher than what most statisticians would tell you would be a minimal number for good representative results.
Of course, this ignores the possibility that all the polled people were from one small area, were all viewers of that TV station, or for the most part fucking with the pollsters, all of which would prevent you from accurately profiling the UK based on it.
As I was walking down the stair,
    I met a man who wasn't there.
    He wasn't there again today.
    I wish, I wish he'd go away.
