Default Loading PS2 games from External HDD?

my friend just gave me his modded ps2, (plays backups etc.)
burning games and playing them is cool and all but can I run disc images on the PS2 directly from an External HDD? via USB or somethin without havin to buy anything special.
USBXtreme looks cool but advertises that it can do the stuff on an unmodded console...since i already have a modded console, can i skip on the usbxtreme disc, or even use a backup/burned copy of the USBXtreme disc?

Is this the one u refer too? minus the swap disc part ofcourse

    edit:
will this ruin the memory card? or will i be able to save to the HDD instead of the memcard?
are there any alternatives to using an original PS1 disc?

Ok, ive found a few different tutorials but they are basically the same so getting the exploit to work shouldn't really be a problem....

My only concern now is if the HDLoader will work with a USB or Firewire HDD instead of a Network HDD...\

maybe there is a way to route it through my PC i.e.-HDD->PC->PC network addapter->PS2....(sounds tough)

Using a USB HDD will decrease the compatiblity significatively and it's much slower than slower than a IDE HDD.

It's still an IDE HDD in an external enclosure from i-rocks
the Enclosure supports USB and FIREWIRE IO

If you want to have the best compatibility you need the network adapter and a internal HDD, that if yours is a fat model. If it's a PSTwo then the usb HDD is your only option since there's no 3.5" expansion bay, in which case you should read this:

you can buy a hdcombo (http://www.hdcombo.com/) if you have a PS2 Slim. The website says: its for V12 or V13 models, but i have a V15 with HDCombo and it works without problems.
