High School of the Dead. Only 12 episodes, I wish they'd make more. Everything about the anime is really well done.

    Bokurano.
If you liked Neon Genesis Evangelion, this is right up your alley.
It hurts and it hits close to home. You can't really talk about true sadness from an anime until you've seen this.

Aoi Bungaku-This anime is based on several different Japanese stories, the stories are disturbing, but not scary. It's only 12 episodes, so it's a short series.

A few I would recommend are FLCL, Gurren Lagan, Darker Than Black, Eden of the East, Angel Beats, and Cowboy Bebop.

    Inspired by the Psycho-Pass discussion:
anybody who likes anything by Gen Urobuchi is obligated to see Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero.
You are not obligated to read his VN, Saya no Uta, however, because that shit will scar you for life.
His first show, Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom was okay, but nowhere near on par with those masterpieces.
...and I won't mention Gargantia besides spitting a bit of bile. I pray whatever he does next makes up for that faux sci-fi slice of life garbage.

And my other Immortal Beloved, Dai Sato:
    Ergo Proxy
    Wolf's Rain
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
and on a lower tier, but still good: Eureka 7

. . .I'd like to mention my third immortal beloved, but Soraya Saga hasn't been doing jack shit but chirping on twitter lately.

I've been into intense animes lately, such as Death Note, Steins;Gate and Attack on Titan. What I find intense about these animes is that the plots are exiting and unique, the episodes often end with cliffhangers, and the story line is very compact and a lot happens in every episode. I know this is a really vague description, but someone who has watched any of these animes might get what I mean. Does anyone have suggestions for similar animes?

I'd say Code Geass fits that description.
