Problem with No$GBA save settings

Hi again
I've got a small problem with saving settings on no$gba
This is what happens
I have it save the settings, and it creates a config file in the folder. no problems there.
however, once i load up no$gba again, it freezes. it doesn't matter what i change, it always freezes. once i delete the config file it goes back to normal
Is this a common problem? is there a way to fix it?

I can't save at all.
Do I save by right clicking and clicking save state? When I do that I get a file in my NO$GBA folder?
Am I supposed to save somewhere in game for it to actually save?

The savestate? It will only work on GBA games, not for DS, use in-game save for that.
