    Default The shmup thread!

So, any other shmup (shoot 'em up) fans here? I love games like this, and I'm glad that they're still coming out (Homura just came out for PS2, and there's a NEW DREAMCAST SHMUP COMING OUT!!!!!).

So yeah, some of my favorite shmups are:

    ESPGaluda (PS2)
    Psyvariar 2 (DC)
    Shikigami no Shiro 2 (DC)
Ikaruga (DC) (More on Ikaruga in a sec...)
    Zero Gunner 2 (DC)
    Homura (PS2)
    Gradius V (PS2)
    R-Type Final (PS2)
    Batsugun (ARC)
    Battle Garegga (ARC)
    Battle Barkraid (ARC)
Gunbird (ARC) and Gunbird 2 (DC)
    Guwange (ARC)
    ESP Ra. De. (ARC)
    Mars Matrix (DC)
    Giga Wing 2 (DC)

And I'm sure there's more. Anyway, yeah, Ikaruga. WHY THE FUCK CAN I NOT BEAT THE SECOND FUCKING STAGE? It's insane. I can beat Psyvariar 2, I can beat ESPGaluda, but I can't beat the second damn stage of Ikaruga. I mean, I love the game to no end, but damn is it HARD.

Yeah, so, feel free to discuss/recommend good shmups and stuff. Oh, and also feel free to mock my Ikaruga suckiness.

/me would like to see a good contra game released... One that doesn't go the same path as the stupid crazy Hard Corps (points to PS2 releases)...

EDIT: Oh and to stay on topic, Gradius Gaiden and Gradius V are must haves. Especially Gradius Gaiden. The Boss theme is great. BUY BUY BUY! Or wait for the PSP Gradius collection. Gradius 1 - 4 and Gaiden. AWESOME!

    ESPGaluda?

Is that by any chance related to the kick ass ESP Ra De?

    Yes. It's a sequel (technically, a prequel).

rRootage even has an Ikaruga game mode. Hehe.
I can't say I love the genre, though there are a few even I enjoy, like Ikaruga, and the above games.

Some shoot-em up out of the arcade call Zed-blade. Notable for its awesome early 90's acid hardcore music. And you get to shoot stuff in a nicely explosive fashion.

I love the genre. I've yet to play all those old school arcade shooters (Radiant Silvergun, ESP Ra De and the like), but I played most of the R-Type and Gradius series. I think I have around thirty aircrafts left to collect in R-Type Final. U.N Squadron is also a shooter I spent a lot of time with on my old SNES. Ah, the olden days. It's a shame the shmup genre is not as popular as it used to be.
