What should be the -very- first thing I do to learn? >< Like, could someone maybe link me to some sites that can teach me. I want to try to learn how to read it (not speak it or understand it verbally) in my spare time.

ha, you won't learn it off a website. Try Rosetta stone for starters. Even if you don't care about speaking or understanding spoken word it is probably still the best way
Start with Katakana then move to Hiragana. DON'T start with Kanji or you're never going to finish.
what he said. and i hear that the different level of politeness will suck your soul.
I would say don't learn it overall. it is one hell of a language to learn, and you will never use it in your life, unless you go to Japan, which really isn't that great.
i'm guessing he wants to read import manga, and just for good measure, the Japanese subtitles on English-dubbed anime dvds, because that's how he rolls, playa.
Well, since the vast majority of the games I play are Japanese, learning to read it would help, regardless of me going to Japan.
Thanks for reminding me about Rosetta Stone, McGuinty. I'd heard it mentioned before, and now that I'm not lazy like I was at that time, I can search for a download. ^^
Edit: But, are you sure it teaches to READ the language and not just speak?
right, i forgot about video games. and as far as dl, i managed to get a bit of *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge* off emule, but it seems to be having troubles right now. Only Kad network searches turn up anything.
Edit: yes reading is a part of it i am positive, probably not as much as the spoken word but it's there.
*Grins.* Well, I just did a search on eMule and I'm downloading the entire Japanese thingy. Over a gig.
sweet. remember you need the main app to read the lesson packs
grab japanese for busy people ebook, that way you can read it while your on the go
Theres quite a detailed look at japanese (for learning) on www.guidetojapanese.org but you need to stop and learn the hiragana and katakana (I learned katakana first, but I don't know why people reccomend it that way round, as hiragana is much more useful).
I don't yet know the best method of learning Kanji, but its probably best to do a few at a time and learn them properly (stroke order, both readings and any english meanings) and write them in a book.
