The best PSX emus are ePSXe and Emurayden.
As for the controller, if you plan to play a lot and dont want to use the keyboard, I'd recommend you to go with a PSX pad with one of those USB adaptors to hook it up to your PC. Will try to find you a link.
There are many models, but something like this

I'd definitely say it's worth getting a controller. You fingers will cramp up way to easy on a keyboard and the feel is much closer to the real console using a controller. Just make sure you get a controller with a decent Direction pad and analog with all the necessary buttons.
A lot of PC controllers have horrible analog and Dpads, the analog will have very little range or almost no dead zone so the analog gets stuck constantly moving in one direction even when you don't touch it and Dpads have a tendency to go in a diagonal direction when you just press straight left or right.
You may want to try to get something at a local store that's easy to return. I've had to return most of the controllers I've bought because of Dpad or analog problems. I can't believe how cheaply manufactured most of them are.
If you can live without vibration support, look into getting a Nyko Airflow controller. Its essentially a pc version of the dual shock, minus the shock.
The main advantage is the vents and two-speed fan, so you can keep your hands from sweating on the rubber grips. Decent build quality, never gave me any problems when I was using it for GT2.
Probably cost about $50 au (converted to wherever you come from), as a rough guess. Could be a little hard to get hold of, but it shouldnt be too hard.
Pick up an Xbox 360 Pad
You could try to mod an xbox pad if ur up to it.
u can get a used controler cheap on ebay or sumthin.
and i can supply you with the drivers and a guild if u like.
ive done it and it works great.
all buttons and axises work fine
even the presure sensitive controls work
all u need is:
some electrical tape
wire strippers
a spare usb cord
and an xbox controller.
soldering iron and soldering skills (optional) itll hold it together a little better.
Just get a dual shock and adaptor for it. The computer ripoffs are not as comfortable to use.
you can just buy a xbox usb converter from here XBOX CONVERTER USB its cheaper if you dont got a soldering iron and dont know how to sold.Originally Posted by Xcliber
I would rather make one than buy one, I made mine and it works wonders.
You dont "need" to solder
itll jus hold together better if u do
its not that hard to do
i even have mine rigged to work on both the pc and the xbox (ie bosth a usb end and xbox pad end)
Vivi ever try to build a dual arcade joystick with 18 buttons in total.
