Why are people so mean?

OMG I have been looking around on the site and when someone, most likely someone who is new, makes a mistake, there are all of these people and they are like "OMG are you stupid or sumthing? Why would you post this here? R U retarded or somethin?" Would it kill you to just nicely point someone in the right direction without making fun of them? There are some people that are very helpful and I don't mean to freak out on them, but some people just annoy me. It's not like anyone is perfect and has never made a mistake. So sad.

I try to be helpful where I can. But unfortunately, my experience is limited, so I'm of little help. I'm more what you'd call 'colour' on these forums at least. But I don't jump on people unless they deserve it (if they ask the same question too many times despite having recieved several clear answers, if they go completely nuts if someone suggests something they've already thought of etc). But I do know in general about what white's talking about. It's not just here, it's all over the internet. The tendency of people to shout "OMG! n00b! GTFO my internets!" whenever someone asks a stupid question.
