Online Sports Marathon?

First off, apologies if this is "noob", i've lurked here for a while but dont ever really post. I've tried to do some research on this and even did a board search here before asking, but couldnt really come up with what i'm looking for.

my situation...

I run a PS2 online NCAA league. 100 or so guys who just love to play sports games online. Basically what i'd like to do is kinda a retro Em/Rom sports game marathon using a bunch of old EA Sports Genesis games and maybe throw in Tecmo and/or one or two from the NES platform.

So my question is, is this possible? Would the ROM have to be programmed to allow 2player online play? Or are there special EMs that allow for online vs. play? Basicallyl I'd love to get this started, but I don't really have an idea how to get it up and going. I REALLY would appreciate any help you can give me.
