What's the best console?

What's with all these new consoles? Why the fuck do we need more? Every Xbox game is shit, and there's 'xbox 360' coming out now. And the PS3... what are the improvements? And I really think pS2 was great enough. How many more consoles do you think will be created within the next decade? I think, like, maybe 15 to 20. People are insane! I'm still stuck with snes.

Yay. People will demand better graphics, production costs will go up, games will have less interesting gameplay, etc. etc.
And why the hell would you need super-powered graphics like that? I had great fun with old 2D games as well.
Okay, there are a few interesting options that demand computing power, like real-time physics simulation, but these consoles go only for graphics, don't they?

In essence, graphics or sound couldn't be great and was limited, so what else could they concentrate other than gameplay

Because, a like now there is a certain standard which most gamers want, and a lot of games didn't cut it. But I seriously can't remember playing any bad nes games. Like I said in a previous post, I believe with the introduction of 3D a lot of gameplay was lost.

Yeah, I had (and have) fun with them as well. But when you can get better graphics, I'm all for it. Saying that the story/gameplay will suffer because they look better is bullshit. Any game that looks pretty but has no gameplay or storyline is simply a bad game. Don't blame the console for that.

The story and gameplay is not going to suffer just because it has better graphics...

But at the same time the Gameplay is not getting better ether. It will be the same old same old because developers can hardly afford to take risks now... and it's going to be even more expensive with the next gen... They will want to stick with something they know instead of making new inovative games...

Console RPG's for example have not changed a whole whole lot sence the NES... They have just got better graphics and cut sceens now.

Obviously not, I think Nintendo took an interesting turn with the Revolution, though I don't know what will come of it in the end.
I was trying to say that the developers focus more on getting the most out of a given console's hardware, instead of the gameplay.
And I connected gameplay and graphics on the basis that everything costs money. Modelling high-detail stuff and optimising it supposedly isn't that cheap. Having games cost more means that publishers will most likely trust those developers with their money who have continued to bring in profit at a steady rate. And I think this leads to gaming slowly becoming more of an industry, less focused at entertainment. Like movies, music and most kind of media have eventually become.
By super-powered graphics I meant graphics that were above the standards of a console, one that does not come from the brute power of the hardware itself, but from the efforts of hard working coders. That kind of work could be put to good use somewhere else in some cases.

Playe more NES games then. It seems about 90% of NES games were total crap. However, that other 10% was filled with countless gems. Mega Man, Metroid, Dragon Warrior, etc.

Agreed. It would be damn hard to beat a game with the gameplay of Super Metroid and 10 times the length...

I think just because 3D is possible doesn't mean it should be done. There could be really damn good looking 2D games along side the 3D ones...it would keep things much more interesting, because many gameplay aspects were lost with the transition to 3D.

I think with a faster console comes faster and longer gameplay. That is one thing that seems off with the PS2. All the animations and stuff are slowed down. Most likely the 60hz thing
