    Default Power Metal...

Indeed. I've never really been a fan of power metal, so now I'm looking for some good bands to really get me into it. Just... nothing too cheesy, please.

Savage Circus and Persuader are pure Blind Guardian worship bands, especially the early speedy albums. Not so surprising since Savage Circus is Thomen's (ex BG drummer) band and share a vocalist very reminiscent of Hansi Kursch's style. Check them out if you like Blind Guardian even the slightest.

I would also suggest Gamma Ray, Iron Savior, Manticora, Stormwarrior, Angra (the latest album - Temple of Shadows specifically), Sex Machineguns (Japanese power metal), Hibria, Dungeon, Dragon Force, Lost Horizon.

Yes, Helloween is the mother of all powermetal bands. If you like BG and D&W then you best damned like Iced Earth.

    No one mentioned Stratovarius...

Even though they're not a power metal band, you should listen to Manowar, EVERY single power metal fan I've told Manowar about end up becoming a huge Manowar fan like myself. Similar lyrical themes(but more agressive), hints of cheesiness, but it's heavy metal with a humongous pair of balls. Mokoma are a pretty cool Finnish (modern) heavy metal band too. Also check out Saxon if you're into the NWOBHM stuff, those bastards are older than Iron Maiden!

Also try Sonata Artica, Stratovarius, Darkane. I don't like any of these bands but they are power metal none the less

Sonata and Stratovarius is Power Metal, but not Darkane. Melodic Death Metal is the right genre for that band (I guess ).

If you're going to try Stratovarius, stay clear of their first (Fright Night) and their latest (Stratovarius), which both sucks huge horsecocks. Listen to "Episode" and "Visions" instead.

For Sonata Arctica, go for "Silence" (or actually, any album will do fine, but "Silence" is better than the others). The lyrics and vocals are cheesier than fuck, but in a good way, sort of.

Oh, and let's not forget Hello-fucking-ween. Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part I and II > *.

Do Nightwish and Symphony X count as power metal? If so, they're worth checking out. You should definetely give Stratovarius a try too, as Soeru and Howie mentioned. If you decide you like the soloing style of Stratovarius and their ilk you should also try Yngwie Malmsteen. Neo-classical stuff.

Also give Iron Maiden a listen if you're curious as to where most of the bands mentioned in this thread got their ideas from.
