Guide to playing DIVX / XVID Movies on your PS2
and setting up an FTP to backup PS2 game saves
*** Requires a mod-chip or a way of booting a "Burnt" cd ***
I have made a boot cd which contains a few programs
Get My Pre-made Boot Cd here
+ ExecFTP 0.68 (FTP Program v0.68)
+ ExecFTP 0.69 (FTP Program v0.69)
+ Ps2 Reality Media Player (DIVX / XVID Player)
+ MP3 Player (play MP3s)
+ Ps2 Memory Card Format (Format a Corrupted PS2 Memory Card)
+ plus some other useful / useless programs
the boot cd uses "LaunchELF" for the main menu program.
the Playstation 2 IP address for the FTP is set to "192.168.1.20"
the default gateway is "192.168.1.1" and the subnet is "255.255.255.0"
if these settings are good, then you can skip to Burning the Image
otherwise you need to edit the IP Addresses and make a new Cd Image.
*** Creating the ISO with "CDGENPS2" ***
first mount the ISO I have made into a "virtual CD Drive"
and copy the contents to a folder on your hard-drive.
to change the IP addresses, edit the file "config.dat" with notepad.
the IP address are separated by a space, change the settings to your liking and save.
- 1st IP = IP Address
- 2nd IP = Subnet Mask
- 3rd IP = Default Gateway
run CDGENPS2, drag the files you copied off the cd onto the file-list
window where there are the headings "NAME, LBA, SIZE, DATE/TIME, ROUTE"
after the files have been added, find the system.cnf and right click it and choose edit
check the "fix LBA" and type in 13221 and click ok, this will change LBA of SYSTEM.CNF to * 13221
now click the "VOL" buton on the sidebar (the fifth button) and label your disc
I called mine "PS2Utils", then click ok, this will change the name of the first file
now click the IMG button (the fourth button), choose either "ISO" or "BIN"
choose the format your image burning program can burn (if you don't know, choose ISO)
choose a filename and location for your image and remember where you saved it
after the image was been written click ok, and you should have an ISO about 25mb big.
*** Burning the Image ***
now burn the ISO onto a CDR using an Image Burning Program
A program like alcohol 120% or Nero should be able to do it.
after it has finished burning, boot the CDR in your PS2
*** Booting the CD ***
after a successful boot, you will see a green screen with a list of programs.
now, you can use the Boot CD everytime you want to boot the PS2 Reality Media Player
and then switch the disc after the program has loaded.
To do this, just press "X" on the list screen and the PS2 Reality Media Player will be run off
the "Boot CD", if you decide to run it from the Boot CD skip to the "changing settings" section below
if you want to put the program on a memory card, this requires a
"memory card boot enabled" mod-chip, then continue with the steps below
*** Copying "PS2 Reality Media Player" so it boots from your HDD / Memory Card ***
if your mod-chip supports memory card booting or hard drive booting you can
put the player onto your memory card or hard drive and boot the program
from there.
I use a Second Memory Card for PS2 (8MB) to store the Player, the player's settings
and 6mb's of save games. The player program shows up as CORRUPT DATA on my PS2
so be really careful not to accidently delete the player.
now to put the program onto your memory card, first put your memory card in SLOT 1
and remove the memory card from SLOT 2 so it is empty.
after you have booted the "Boot CD" press "Triangle"
this will start the "File Manager" program where you can manage files on your
Playstation 1 Memory Card / Playstation 2 Memory Card / HDD / USB HDD.
first select "MC0://" and press "Circle"
now press R1 and select "New Dir" and press "Circle"
type in "BOOT", without the quotes and select "OK" and press "Circle"
replace "BOOT" with whatever folder your mod-chip boots from
now you have made the folder, press "Triangle" to go "Up" a folder
select the "CDFS://" option and press "Circle"
this will access the CD-ROM and will list the CD-Rom contents
select the folder PS2MEDIA and open it by pressing "Circle"
select the file called BOOT.ELF and press "R1" and select "copy" and press "Circle"
the message "Copied to the clipboard" appears at the top of your screen.
Press "Triangle" and go 'Up" a folder, select "MC0://" and press "Circle"
select the folder you made before and press "Circle", this will open the folder,
press R1, select "Paste" and press "Circle", this will copy "BOOT.ELF" to your Memory Card
you need about 1.5mb of free space on your memory card for this
My DMS4-Pro Mod-Chip boots from a file called "BOOT.ELF" in a folder called "BOOT" on the
Memory card in SLOT 1 when the "Triangle" button is held when the Playstation 2 is turned on
once you have done this you can turn off your playstation 2
and try booting using your memory card instead of the CDR.
To put it on the HDD, follow the same steps but instead of "MC0", use
"MASS://" for a USB HDD or "HD0://" for your Hard Drive on your network adaptor
You need the DIVX / XVID movie in the playstation 2 when you start the player from the memory card
*** Running And Changing The "PS2 Reality Media Player" Settings ***
once you've got the program running you'll see a few
"Warning and Copyright" screens, press start to skip these screens
you can change discs if you used the Boot CD
once you get to the "main menu"
goto Configuration menu and adjust the settings to your liking
the settings are stored on the memory card in slot 1 when you choose "save settings"
I have mine set to "High Quality" and "16 Bit", "32 bit" seems most of my movies skip and jump
if your movies still jump in "16bit" change the quality to "medium" or "low"
In the "Miscellany" section you can turn on and off GUI elements
once you've set and saved your settings, you are all set to play a DIVX movie on your PS2.
if your disc only contains one movie then on the main menu choose play and it will play.
if your disc contains more then one movie (like multiple AVI's on a DVD-R)
you have to choose the Browser option from the menu and select the file you want to play,
*** Running the FTP ***
Simply boot the "Boot CD" and press "L1" or "R1" to run the FTP Program
L1 is ExecFTP v0.68 and R1 is ExecFTP v0.69
run version 0.69 first and it fails to load, then try running version 0.68
after the FTP has loaded (might take a minute) you can access the FTP
by opening an FTP client and connecting to port 21 on the IP address you specified,
the default IP address is 192.168.1.20, no username or password is required to connect.
- Path to access Memory Card in slot 1 is /mc/0/
- Path to access Memory Card in slot 2 is /mc/1/
- Path to access Network Adaptor Hard Drive is /hdd/0/
if you access the /mc/ folder, you might see a list of folders from 0 to 15
only use the folders 0 (memory card 1) and 1 (memory card 2)
you cannot copy any "playstation 1" save games to your PC, it looks like they
succeed in copying but when you copy them back they will show up as corrupt data.
