    Default Play PS2 backups without modchip or swap trick

    :: You need ::
    * A PS2 (obviously)
    * A PS2 memory card
    * A HDD to use with HDLoader
    * WINHIIP (download at EurAsia.nu)
    * The memory card version of HDLoader (The needed package can be downloaded over at EurAsia.nu. It's called HDLoader mc installer.)
    * A PSOne disc (has to be a *real* disc, not something you burned yourself)
    * And you need to either A) find a friend/relative who have a modded PS2. or B) use the Swap trick method.

    :: The goal ::
    Being able to play import/backup games on your PS2 without the need of modding it or using the swap trick (you may however need to use this method once).

    :: Step 1 - Memory card exploit ::
    The memory card exploit will allow you to launch any ELF application that you've placed on your memory card.

    The first thing you need to do is, using Notepad, to open up the system.cnf file found on your PSOne disc. The content of this file should look something like this:

    BOOT = cdrom:\SLES_021.43;1
    TCB = 4
    EVENT = 10
    STACK = 702fff00

    The part you are intrested in is the part in bold. Write it down/Remember it. Now, extract the files found in the HDloader MC installer package. Open up the command line tool in Windows and browse your way to the folder where you extracted the files. Type in: titleman -a [the numbers/letter from before].

    I.E. titleman -a SLES_021.43

    Everything should've gone smooth so far.

    :: Step 2 - Making the MC installer image::
    Open up the CDGenPS2 application included in the HDloader MC installer package. With this program you will make the ISO that will install HDLoader onto your memory card.

    According to the readme file included in the package, you are supposed to put these files in the following order (not really sure if it matters):
    system.cnf
    expinst.elf
    cdvd.irx
    title.db
    FILES folder

    After you've done that, simply press on one of the buttons to the left to make an image out of the files. Burn using your favorite application.

    :: Step 3 - Installing HDLoader ::
    For this you either need a friend who own a modded PS2 or you need to use the swap trick. I won't tell you how to use the swap trick though, as I have never tried it myself. Search the Internet for details.

    Insert the memory card into your PS2 and simply start the disc you burned. It will start installing the HDLoader onto your memory card. Note that the memory card must be in slot 1! Once done, you don't need this disc anymore.

    :: Step 4 - Launching HDLoader ::
    Now you can launch the HDLoader from your memory card simply by using the PSOne disc from earlier in this tutorial. Start the disc and instead of booting the actual game, HDLoader will be launched. Remember that only this disc will launch HDLoader. If you want to use another PSOne disc, you need to redo the steps above. Either way you can now use HDLoader!

    :: Step 5 - Adding import/backup games to the HDD ::
    If you don't have a modchip you can add games to the HDD as HDLoader does a test to verify it's a *real* disc. But there is a way to "bypass" this. Take out the HDD out of your PS2 and connect it to your computer. Either by placing it inside the computer or using an external HDD chassi. I prefer the latter method. It's much easier. Once the HDD is connected, use WINHIIP to transfer your games. The program is very straight forward and should not be of any problems. Here you can choose to transfer ISOs directly from your computer or from your DVD/CD reader, to the HDD. Really simple!

    :: Step 6 - Playing games ::
    Just place the HDD back in your PS2, launch HDLoader using your PSOne disc and you can play the games you added! Of course there are some games that won't work so I suggest that you check this page

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/casey.m...patibility.htm

    for a compatiblity list. Also, if you are in PAL regions and want to play NTSC games, you might need to patch the games in order to play in colour. For this you need a PS2 NTSC TO PAL patcher. It can be downloaded over at EurAsia.nu.

    ---

    I hope you understand these steps perfectly and that it might help some of you poor souls that can't get a modchip. It's pretty easy once you get the hang out if but it's a hassle compared to using a modded PS2 or the swap method... I guess. But either way it works nicely.

    Comments/Questions? ^^;

    EDIT: There are many better ways to get the exploit running these days. Like using a USB memory stick, etc. I have not tried these methods myself though so I cannot help you with that. Also, the exploit will ONLY work on the older and bigger PS2 models.

    The benefit to this would be not having to pay for the HD loader DVD?

    Interesting, who moved this by the way we already have a ton of guides in the Everything Emulation related to both console hardware and emulators all linked in the Emulator and Hardware Guides

    Not this one though

    P.S. have you had a look at PS2OS yet?
    Not sure what it can do and it's still in development though there is a working version to download last time I checked.

    If not I'll see if I can dig out a link for you, at the mo my PS2 is rather dead, I'll get a new one in time though

    HDLoader is not on sale anymore, as far as I know. So I think it's ok to post this...
    The benefit is that you do not have to pay for a modchip and you do not have to struggle with the swap trick.

    @Zorlon: I moved it here. Feel free to move it back if you want it in Everything Emulation.
    PS2OS you say? I want to know more...

    Sounds good Valholy. Tell me if you are having any problems getting it running and I'll try to help.

    Megalith, I need to beat some other games. I've only tried one game so far using this method: Suikoden III. Works great though.

    Would the Action Replay Max let you install the memcard boot thing from a UMCDR or does it just let you play media files and Megadrive/Genesis Roms under P-Gen?

    I don't have a working PS2 at the mo but I installed the memcard boot system ages ago anyway with an old Action Replay/swop trick, butif theMax lets you do what I thibnk it might beable to do you wouldn't need a swop trick, it would also depend if the install method can be run from a UMCDR aswell

    UMCDR being an odd format of CD-R that can run under the memcard thing without any tricks, and is also what the Max version of the Action Replay uses
