Are you annoyed by the ad banners on some websites and you don't want to use external proxy program to restrict access to them, or your adblock doesn't block them?
Here's the deal:
- Every member replying to this thread should post an address of some 3rd party advertising server. Whenever you go to a page that has ad banner, look at the source code to see its address.
Together we will get an ultimate list of blocked addresses for the ad-free browsing!
And here are the instructions on how to do the actual blocking (in Windows):
1. Open HOSTS file with Notepad (or any text editor), it is located by default in:
Win95/98/ME: C:\WINDOWS\
WinXp: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\
Other NT based: C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\
(I'm not sure of ME and the path on other NT based Windows, please correct if wrong)
The hosts file may be hidden and therefore difficult to open sometimes, please enable showing hidden files.
2. Add a line looking like this:
127.0.0.1 stupid.advertise.com
3. Add more lines like that, always starting with 127.0.0.1, then space and then the server address.
4. Save the file and enjoy blank space on where those ads should be
This is especially handy with modem users as they do not need to download those banners at all.
So, post any advertisement server addresses you found, and I will edit this post to list all of them.
