What state are those figures based on? The taxes are diffrent in every state.

My state (like i own it) is one of the lowest... because we invented tabaco, and were are proud to be killing people slowly since 1607.

Trying to change someone's opinion on smoking is pointless. If he, or anyone else, wants to smoke then it's his choice- no one should be getting their panties in a twist over it (especially on the internet).

Well, this was based in Michigan before the ginormous tax. Now we pay 30 dollars a carton here, so it is probably close to doubled.

I just posted it as an example, to help you get an idea of the cost.

Emphyzema is one of the worst and earliest conditions you can get from smoking. It's a lung disease in which your alveoli(the microscopic sacs of tissue in your lungs that exchange oxygen and CO2 with the outside through blood vessels) get all mushy.

Basically, the carbon monoxide in cig smoke, not to mention another couple dozen toxins, deteriorates the walls of your alveoli. Alveoli normally have the shape of a bushy tree, or a 12-leaf clover or something, and smoking burns away and reduces them to a tiny little flat lump. This incredibly reduces the surface area of an alveolus, so the exchange of gases in your body is greatly reduced. What does this mean to you? You get exhausted almost instantly from even walking up a flight of stairs.

Now what I don't understand is why people enjoy smoking. I've tried it a few times and it just tastes horrible, gives you absolutely no high, and seems to have no effect on my nervous system. It blocks me from inhaling sweet fresh air, why anyone would want to do that is beyond me. Plus, the smell is unbearable, I have throw all my clothing in the washer if I spend just 20 minutes with a heavy smoker. Long hair is certainly a -100 if you smoke too...

Everyone I've asked why they smoke, like what they get out of it... none of them could give me a concrete answer. They too agreed it tastes like crap, but they claimed that they just had to have one every morning or every hour to keep them... satisfied.

Edit: I agree, smokers shouldn't be social outcasts, but then neither should drug addicts. To each his own. But seriously, if anything can be done to get people to stop smoking, cig companies should be shut down... or at least impose a ridiculous tax on every box of cigarettes/cigars anywhere in the world.

Another effect of corbon monoxide is that it actually affects blood, lowering the amount of oxygen which again means that u easily get winded from any kind of.. well anything. This also causes serious problems during pregnancy when a lack of oxygen reaching the baby can lead to stunted growth, disfiguration and stillbirth.

Also smoking destroys cillia, tiny hairs on the inner surfaces of the the lungs designed to move mucus from the lungs to the throat where it can be swallowed or coughed up. Without these cillia the mucus is retained and acts as bacteria breeding ground causing infections and inflammmation. Smoke stimulates the mucus producing goblet cells to make more mucus too. Which explains why heavy smokers have such problems with phlegm.

Textbook answer, you did your homework. One thing though, smoking doesn't destroy the cillia but it paralyzes it, so it stops working for a while when it comes in contact with the chems in cig smoke(a natural reflex, hence why it may sting/itch beggining smokers at first). So yeah, you're then allowing all sorts of germs to get past your throat and into your lungs. Yummy.

Also, since your insides are nice and sticky, smoke sticks to the insides and with time it produces cancer, emphyzema, aches, inflammation... oh, and lets not forget another dozen diseases that do not involve the respitaratory system. Smoking also worsens many other medical conditions...

But I won't waste my time typing all this. I'm pretty sure anyone who reads this and smokes will continue to do so regardless. I just think it was a good effort to keep people informed, even if they don't give a rat's ass about their health.

Most people don't really think much about or worry about stuff thats bad for them that damages their body over time. If it dosen't make them sick right off then they won't worry about it. I want to look and feel young as long as possible so I think about the future.

My cousins girlfriend smokes a lot and everytime she is here, she coughs every 3-5 min. It gets really annoying, especially since it reminds me that she is here.

Cancer is not produced in the way that you stated,

cancer (all type to my knowledge) is caused by deteration of the P53 Geene. This geen controls cell growth and ensures that any "etra cells" proptly comits suicude. Smoking can cause this geen to mutate, or behave strangely, but so can breathing the air in a city (which contans far more chems then a smoke), riding in a car that reaks of exahust fumes / getting stuck in trafic. as well as eat some types of fish, and even beef.

Cancer is causes not by one thing alone, but is a culmination of all factos involved. Ife seen wemon, you exorcised regulary die at age 42 of breast cancer. whilst a smoker age 94 stiff hacks and caughs down another one.

To bring it up like that with out elaborating isn't fair...

Cancer is a relativly odd thing as there are things that can "set" it off IMO.

    A little parable

One relative of mine smoking 20-30 a day and died of old age and for the rest of her life was quite healthy

Another relative knocked her knee falling down the stairs, which caused a cancer which killed her 6 months later

    Food for thought

Cancer is caused by chemical agents called carcinogens. These carcinogens damage genes in Cell Nuclei. These can be repaired but constant exposure to a carcinogen (e.g. cigarette smoke) can permantly damage them. They then become "immortal" a term used to describe a cell which divide indefinitely (Normal cells divide a certain number of times then kick the bucket automatically) Since they divide without a fixed pattern they crowd out healthy cells and also fail perform their own functions. These cancerous cells can then break through the walls of other tissues and if they reach blood or lymph vessels can spread to other parts of the body.
