Donkey Kong is a classic videogame icon, but he is also...simply a rather large ape with no character development, no real reasoning for what he does... He's basically just a shell, a characterless character, just something you control. You can't tell me you've ever felt any deep emotional tie to Kong as a character...can you? Vivi, in contrast, is a well developed character who really changes and progresses as the game goes on. He's far closer to a human in terms of the choices he makes and the reasoning behind them. While Kong is a classic videogame icon, he's not a better character.Originally Posted by Georgyw5k
Erm...I play Final Fantasy, and I can understand the plots just fine =/ As long as you're not skipping the dialogue and you actually pay attention, they're hardly the most complex things in the world... Characters I can relate to? Like what, your earlier example of Donkey Kong? Yes, I can indeed relate to a giant ape, his reasoning is perfectly rational to me. In fact, I can sympathise with his motives and feel a great bond to him. Yes, Final Fantasy games are set in a fantasy world, but that's the point. It's not called Final Reality, it's called Final Fantasy. The characters in most FFs are leaps and bounds ahead of the cardboard cutout stereotypes of so many other genres.Originally Posted by Georgyw5k
Err...ever read 'the Lord of the Rings' or 'the Chronicles of Narnia'? Let's face it, fantasy has been around way longer than Final Fantasy. Are you going to debunk such classic works simply because they're not realistic enough? I say again, it's not supposed to be realistic, Final Fantasy is just that, fantasy. It's set in worlds people have dreamt up, and to attack such things for being, as it seems you are saying, 'too imaginative' is just downright wrong... Look at a game like Xenogears, it's hardly the best game in terms of gameplay, graphics...but it's got the most wonderful, most imaginative storyline behind it and as a result it actually works. Most games nowadays aren't imaginative enough, they just take the same old conventions and add a new spin on them, and if you took out the stories and settings, FF would be the same, each game would just be a new spin on a tired formula. It's the stories, worlds and characters that make each game unique, though if you're content to play a series like, say, Tomb Raider, where every game is simply a rehash of a tired fomula, please be my guest.Originally Posted by Georgyw5k
Final Fantasy has been going for years. Pokemon, on the other hand, is relatively new. I don't know where the comparison there lies, aside from the fact that they're both RPGs (and Pokemon is a pseudo-RPG...). But if you want to make that kind of comparison... Why play Metal Gear Solid when Tomb Raider's been around for years? Why play Marvel vs Capcom when you can play the original Street Fighter? Two games can fall into the same genre without being the same game...Originally Posted by Georgyw5k
That's a rather...rash generalisation... You say all FF players think that way, so is it impossible, then, to like FF without being an FF fanboy? You only need to look at the replies to this thread to get an answer: no. There's plenty of FF fans who'll more than happily admit that the series has it's share of flaws, myself included.Originally Posted by Georgyw5k
And to clarify, I don't think not liking Final Fantasy means you don't appreciate games. It's a matter of personal preference. You should at the same time, however, acknowledge that the same is true of others, that they should be free to choose what they think of the series. Your tone indicated that you have as little respect for FF fans as the fanboys do for you not liking it, so I don't see how you're any better than they are, in that respect...
If someone likes a series, then what's the harm? If it happens to be your favourite game series then that's just fine and dandy: as with everything there's fans and then there's fans. Just to clarify, I fall into the first category. I enjoy the Final Fantasy games, but I'd agree that there's those who highly overrate them. I'm more of a general RPG fanboy.Originally Posted by Georgyw5k
