Question about an episode in Cowboy BeBop

First off, I tried posting this in Anime Paradise but the thing just wouldn't let it get in the messageboard. At least when I refresh it wasn't there. So forgive me for posting it here. Maybe it will work in Free 4 All.

Ok, the specific episode in question was when Ed went against the old guy in that game of chess (I won't include sopilers as to what happened). The question is if the old chessmaster guy did or did not die in the end. I'm asking because of a bet.
