    5kbps is about the best that you will get with 56k. I have cable internet at 1mbp (around 1000ks) and I get 200k download and 50 upload. I'm not sure how it figures out but its a lot less than what you think.

    56Kbps stands for Kilobits per second. Meaning that 5 KB or kilobytes per second equal about 56Kbps since kilobits are smaller than kilobytes. Something like that. Telling you how many kilobits your connection can go is either
    A. To make it seem faster.
    or
    B. It is more accurate.

    Yea what Foxhound said, but to clarify, a capital B means a byte, which is 8 bits, and a lowercase b is a bit. Usually net speeds are given in bits per second, so be careful of that. Also to note, your upload speed will differ from you download speed most likely. For instance, I'm on cable, and on most downloads, I get about 300 k/s, and for uploads it tops out at about 15k/s. I can't recall if those are bits or bytes in those instances, just that it's fast enough for me, and I'd probably give up an appendage before going back to 56k.

    Your download speed also depends greatly on the source you download from

    Actually your connection speed and your download speed are 2 different things. Your download speed is about your connection speed/8.

    So for:
    56kbps-> 56/8=7kb/s download speed
    1mbps cable->1024/8=128kb/s
    1.5mbps cable->1536/8=192kb/s
    4.1mbps cable->4198.4/8=524.8kb/s

    Think also that 1 megabyte is 1024 kilobyte.
    Damn I love my 4.1mbps cable
    (when the downloads are uncapped and/or when the happy hours works...)

    Edit-> Ah, and the upload speed of the server also makes your download speed differs. If the server can't uload at more than 10kb/s, you'll only get 10kb/s whatever connection you got.
    Go on microsoft.com, that's one of the site where you can get the best speed.
