I agree wholeheartedly, in my experience, codec packs have just created more problems for me that they're worth, since a lot of the codecs seem to conflict a lot of the time =\

avoide playback through windows media player alltogether. use vlc instead. it plays just about every kind of file without needing any extra codecs. the ony exceptions are windows media 9 files and realplayer files. u can find vlc at http://www.videolan.org

also, they put out a new version recently so anyone who already has it may wanna get the new version.

OooOo players, http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli Get Media player Classic from there, look like the old Media player 6.2 series, but has a LOT of extra feature, and other nice stuff.

vlc is better becuase it has built-in dvd capabilities and even on a region protected drive is able to play back any dvd from any region pal or ntsc.

Just elaborating in avoiding codec packs and especially Nimo: Nimo codec pack installed a whole bunch of stuff that worked really well, but it wouldn't let me play Warcraft III because it fiddled with something that it shouldn't've and Warcraft III video components wouldn't play, thus the game wouldn't load; also, it inverted the image on all my MPEG videos. =\ Which was... queer, to say the least.

That's all nice and stuff, but MPC can do exactly the same........ So I don't see what's better about it. Already said that MPC looks like Media Player 6.4, but it's had a gigantic overhaul.

There's an option to turn it again so it's normal again. But still best to avoid Nimo.

Do you know if the .avi is a xvid or divx?

divx codec is easy to get if it's xvid and you're having troubles with it try installing ffshow it worked for me when divx codecs didn't work and I installed ffshow now i have no problem

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/

I recommend to get the one with release date 2002-06-17 the 2nd link. If that doesn't work than try reinstalling divx codec, you can get it at

    http://www.divx.com

To make it easier on you just click this link: http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX511Bundle.exe

Done all the searching for you. If the file still doesn't play let me know and I'll try to think of what else it could be.

This guy just needs help with codecs. Windows Media Player is fine. The most recent version is more stable and fast than older versions. I still use BSPlayer quite often, but WMP will work for most people.

I like the old version of WMP. I think it's 6, but I'm not positive. I know it's one of the one's before 7. WMP 7+ are just full of lots of worthless features IMO.
