I hope i'm not alone. Anybody like American comics? How about Chinese comics? (such as Storm Riders, Blood Sword Dynasty, Legendary Couple, or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon)
Me, i grew up with American comics. As a child, i used to love the Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, The X-Men & The Avengers, but never thought about reading anything else. Now that i am older, i read many, many different kinds of comics, though unfortunately, many comics coming from Marvel nowadays just aren't that great in comparison to the good old days. The Hulk barely appears in his own comic now, for pete's sake. X-Force got butchered & turned into some mockery, & most of the X-Men books are nothing like i grew up with, & tie in too closely with the movies...
But anyways, some books are still incredible. (or 'were', before recent revamping...Why fix something that isn't broken?) Among my current favorite titles by company are as follows:
Marvel
Captain Marvel - PAD (Peter David) is simply an astounding writer. Great combination of humor & action. He has turned Genis into an extremely likable character.
Black Panther - The series was great before it turned into the current 'guns a blazin' book. Priest's work on the book was amazing, turning T'Challa into a sort of "Batman to the extreme." He took over Tony Stark's (Iron Man) company with a single phone call for crying out loud!
Taskmaster - It was only a 4 issue mini, but this series rocked more then most other series in recent memory. UDON has a very distinct anime feel in their artwork, & turned Taskmaster into the biggest badass this side of Deathstroke: The Terminator.
Agent X/Deadpool - The Merc with a Mouth! Once again, UDON proves how much they rock, & with writer Gail Simone's unique sense of humor, it only got better. My only gripe is that Gail doesn't seem to respect Tasmaster all that much, but at least he's in "any" series right now, instead of not being anywhere.
Thunderbolts - This series WAS excellent until Marvel decided to turn it into a steaming mound of crap...
Anything with Thanos in it, as he is my favorite character ever!
DC Comics
Batman - With the amazing Jim Lee currently doing the art for this book, it has been selling like hotcakes. That is good & bad, since it makes it hard to find copies. =(
Birds of Prey - Now with Gail Simone taking over as writer, & with the sexy Black Canary given a new costume, this series is an excellent read.
I'll admit, i don't read as much DC as i do Marvel, but i am hoping to change that soon. Basically, anything with the current Batgirl, (the best martial artist in the DCU currently) Martian Manhunter, Darkseid or Captain "Shazam" Marvel in it i will try to pick up. (Oh, & i seriously don't like Superman.. I love seeing Captain Marvel clean the Blue Boy Scout's clock)
Crossgen is a relative rookie as far as the comic scene goes, but they have some of the best stories & art around right now. Great titles include: Sojourn, Solus, The Path & The First. Once i get mo money, i'm gonna buy all their books.
Chinese comics... I LOVE Chinese Comics! Freaking incredible art, storylines focusing on Martial Arts & awesome displays of Ki. Great stuff!
Blood Sword Dynasty - Great book following the exploits of Hero & Ghost Servant. Was also turned into a kickass movie titled "A Man Called Hero"
Storm Riders - Another good one that was made into a movie. Titled "Storm Riders," obviously
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - Yes, the very same as the movie. Based off the original Chinese novels, only thing is that the comics start from the beginning of the books, whereas the movie was really based on book 4 or 5 in a series of 6, I believe. Currently only up to comic 4, so it'll be easy to jump into the series right now.
Well, i've rambled enough. Anybody else enjoy comics as much as I do? Let's hear it!
