having problems with mega man x

the other day I was trying to play a megaman x (USA) rom using zsnes the game started up and everything was going fine I go to chill penguin and accidentally shoot one of his ice projectiles with a basic shot it bounces off and the screen fades to black. it then says you got shotgun ice and I go back to the beginning of the game (I am not talking about the title screen I am talking about the first stage where you fight sigma and meet zero) without shotgun ice or dash step does anyone have a solution?

if zsnes not work try other settings or his rival snes9x 1.53
zsnes now have version 1.51 do you have updated version?
and what are your settings
