I agree with you, I don't use internet handles for many people once I know their names.

I find it varies from person to person with me for whatever reason. At least when talking online off the forum, I always use forum names on the forum. I don't have enough actual meet-ups with forum people to draw a full conclusion, but when I have, we quickly went to real names. We also quickly got drunk but that's another story.
