Earthbound Romhacking Projects: Past, Present, and Future

A few of you might know that I've been working on and off on a romhack of the SNES RPG, Earthbound. What you might not know is that I've been working on a couple different romhacks for the past several years. Mainly using an Earthbound editing program called PKHack. I will be using this blog to showcase some of what I have done and what I have in-store for the future of my romhack/s.

First off I would like to demonstrate my first and only fully-complete romhack. It's a small hack I like to call the "Portable CD Player" .

It's really simple, I have altered the "insignificate item" from Earthbound to be the CD player. Once selected from your inventory you have the option of playing any music track in the game. It works both on the "overworld" and in-battle as well. The only downside is that once you walk through a door it will change the music back to the default for that sector. This was mainly an experiment with what could be done with the music control codes in PKHack.

Here are some some videos of it in action.

Spoiler warning:

I consider this small hack to be v.99. I have since figured out how to resize the menu windows. This will let me increase the amount of tracks per page.

To apply the .ips patch use ebpatch.exe attached below. Select the .ips file and the clean EB rom provided below, then press patch. It should expand the ROM to the required size and everything for you. Once it's done your ROM will be patched and ready to play.

Besides the above hack. I only have a very small alpha demo of a complete conversion hack. I had most of Onette's map converted and Ness's main sprite completely done. As well as some monster/NPC sprite edits. Here's a video showcasing what I had done.

Here are some replacements for the Nintendo, Ape, and Hal logos.

Spoiler warning:

I had been working on it sporadically over the span of a year. I dropped it citing a lack of a cohesive plot. If you would like to try it out, the .ips file is attached below.

On top of the two hacks above, I also have a decent amount of custom battle sprites. In fact, that's what I spend the most time doing.

Here's a collage of all of the custom battle sprites that I've created so far.

Spoiler warning:

Currently I'm working on a Fallout/Post-Apocalyptic spoof hack. I haven't gotten much done "physically". Except for logo and gas station screen replacements.

Spoiler warning:

The thing that differs with my current hack is, unlike my first conversion hack, I actually have a decent amount of notes and ideas written down. Also it helps using an already established universe as the basis for it.

One of my next steps is to make a decent Vault-esque tileset. I might be able to just edit Belch's Factory tiles and have a good tileset to work from. I also have to rename all of the items in the game. Mostly worrying about equip-able and food items. Of course then there's a ton of sprite editing/creating.

Also I'm slowly compiling a F.A.Q./Manual for PKHack. So be on the lookout for that in the near future.

I will try to post updates when they happen. I'm hoping my motivation will be lasting and that I'll be able to update often.
